First-Time Buyers Are on the Move!

Wondering where first-time buyers are moving? New data shows some surprising shifts—and we’ve broken down what it means for local sellers and buyers. With hundreds of buyers already registered with us, it’s well worth a read. 👇

For the first time, the Office for National Statistics has shared detailed data showing where first-time buyers are buying homes across the UK—and the results are really interesting.

What’s Changed in the Last 10 Years?
Back in 2013, there were around 9 first-time buyers for every 1,000 homes. That number grew and peaked in 2021 (when mortgage rates were low and help-to-buy schemes were popular), but by 2023 it dropped back to just over 9 buyers per 1,000 homes.

Why the drop? Mostly due to rising house prices and higher mortgage rates, which have made it harder for first-time buyers to get on the ladder.

Where Are First-Time Buyers Buying Now?
In 2013, London was the main hotspot for first-time buyers. But in 2023, only two London areas were still in the top 10.

Instead, first-time buyers are looking in more affordable places, especially in areas just outside of big cities, where there are more new homes being built and better value for money.

What We’re Seeing Here at Pendle Hill Properties
This national trend matches what we’re seeing right here in our area. We have:

  • 410 qualified buyers looking in Padiham
  • 212 first-time buyers signed up for homes in Longridge

These are not just casual browsers—these are buyers who are registered, qualified, and ready to buy as soon as they find the right property.
